The Gabriel Dumont Institute offers many services, predominantly in teaching post-secondary skills, that support Saskatchewan’s Métis and non-status Indian people. Their publishing department’s mandate is to produce teaching and aboriginal language materials, to pursue contemporary and historical research of Métis history and culture, and to distribute that information to the public. Besides their 29 titles in print, they also produce the Journal of Indigenous Studies.
The Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI) was officially created in 1980 by members of the Association of Métis and Non-Status Indians of Saskatchewan. The institute was established as a means for Métis and Non-Status Indian people to develop their post-secondary skills while strengthening their Aboriginal identity and culture. The Institute has become the sole educational representative of Saskatchewan’s Métis people, though GDI is open to all Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. The publishing department was officially established in 1985, though the Institute had been producing titles before that point.
