| Born in Born in 1926 in London, England, Anne Szumigalski was raised in rural Hampshire.At the beginning of World War II, she worked with Belgian refugees in a hospital near her home. Her next assignment was that of an interpreter in Europe, providing civilian relief in areas hit by the fighting. She met and married a Polish army officer, and they emigrated from Wales to Canada in 1951. She has lived in Saskatchewan since, primarily in Saskatoon. She helped to establish the writing courses at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts and taught poetry there. She co-founded the Saskatchewan Writers Guild, Grain Magazine, and the Writers’ Colony (where?). Her work has predominantly been poetry, though she wrote fiction and drama also. In 1995 she won the Governor-General’s Award for poetry with Voice.
