About the Archive Project

About Us
Originally named the Saskatchewan Sampler, the Book Archive has come a long way. To celebrate the province’s 75th anniversary, a catalogue of Saskatchewan books, The Saskatchewan Bibliography, was compiled in 1980 by Ved Arora at the Provincial Library. It recorded written work published between 1905 and 1979 within the province or by its residents. This undertaking continued in 1993 with a supplement, also compiled by Mr. Arora at the Provincial Library. It listed works published since the completion of the original bibliography. Together, the Saskatchewan Bibliography and First Supplement hold 13 514 records, and these records make up the majority of the Saskatchewan Sampler catalogue. The remainder, covering the span of time between 1993 and 2000, has been compiled by Ben Fair under the direction of the Saskatchewan Publishers Group. Current updates to include books produced since 2000 are being done by Elan Morgan, working with the Saskatchewan Publishers Group. The project is a partnership between the Saskatchewan Writers Guild, the Saskatchewan Library Association, and the Saskatchewan Publishers Group. This project was funded in part by the Western Heritage Fund, the Cultural Human Resources Council, BPDIP, the Canada Council for the Arts, and Saskatchewan Lotteries.

The future of the project involves the printing of the complete, annotated database; the periodical updating of the database as new Saskatchewan books are published; the establishment of a living archive of as many of these books as possible; the creation of new spotlights on writers and publishers while maintaining access to all previous ones; and the continuity of a forum for new information and discourse on Saskatchewan books.
