620 Wild Plants of North America

620 Wild Plants of North America describes, in beautiful detail, the characteristic features of 89 families of vascular plants ? including trees, shrubs, vines, wildflowers, grasses, sedges, horsetails, and club-mosses ? using labeled ink drawings, text and range maps. The author’s drawings are from plants in the field and freshly picked specimens. The text outlines habitat, flowers, fruit, seeds, leaves and stems. The range maps cover central North America from the three Prairie Provinces south to the northern Texas and from Iowa west to Idaho.

With its detailed, labeled drawings, 620 Wild Plants opens the door to understanding the unique morphological features of plants in all of the major families represented in the flora of central North America. Naturalists, birders, students, teachers, conservationists, environmental consultants, wildlife biologists and botanists ? amateur and professional alike ? will find this picture book of plant anatomy an invaluable reference alongside local floras and field guides.

Aboriginal Law (3rd Edition): Commentary and Analysis

Thomas Isaac highlights the most important aspects of Canadian law as it impacts on Aboriginal peoples and their relationship with the wider Canadian society. While covering important issues such as Aboriginal and treaty rights, constitutional issues, land claims, self-government, provincial and federal roles in dealing with Aboriginal peoples, the rights of the Métis, and the Indian Act, this book pays particular attention to the Crown’s duty to consult. In discussing the Crown’s duty to consult the author canvasses when and to whom the duty applies. He also highlights the role of governments in reconciling Aboriginal interests with the needs of Canadian society as a whole. The Supreme Court of Canada is clear that the objective of achieving reconciliation lies primarily with governments.

This is a law book, but it is designed for use by anyone needing to understand Aboriginal legal issues and is presented in a neutral way. All major Canadian cases dealing with Aboriginal law are discussed and analyzed in this volume. The author looks at the broad picture of trends that are developing in the law and the background to such trends. This edition of Aboriginal Law does not contain case or legislative excerpts, all of which are readily available on the internet.

Thomas Isaac is a partner with McCarthy Tétrault LLP in Vancouver, and leads the firm’s Aboriginal Law Group. He speaks extensively on Aboriginal issues across Canada, and is the author of many books and articles on Aboriginal Law, including Aboriginal and Treaty Rights in the Maritimes and three earlier editions of Aboriginal Law.
This book is national in scope, but it also canvasses the many regional situations that exist in Canada. The claims of First Nations peoples in BC, the unique situation of Maritime First Nations, land claim agreements in northern Canada, and the special place of the numbered treaties covering the Prairie provinces are considered and reviewed.

While this is a law book, it is written and designed for use by anyone interested in Aboriginal legal issues. Reviewers have described previous editions as "a welcome guide to the dynamic political and legal environment of the rapidly changing field of Aboriginal law in Canada" and "an excellent piece of work that will be of great benefit to nonlegal scholars as well as the general public." Legal practitioners have called it "a quick and easy to use summary of Aboriginal law."

Thomas Isaac is a nationally recognized authority in the area of Aboriginal law and the author of many books and articles, including two earlier editions of Aboriginal Law and Aboriginal and Treaty Rights in the Maritimes: The Marshall Decision and Beyond. He has advised provincial, territorial, municipal, and First Nations governments on Aboriginal issues, was chief treaty negotiator for the British Columbia government, and assistant deputy minister responsible for creating Nunavut for the Northwest Territories government. He holds bachelor and masters degrees in both political science and law. He practices law with McCarthy Tétrault LLP in Vancouver and is a member of the bars of British Columbia, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

All editions of this book have been used extensively in law, native studies, political science, history, and other courses at the university and college levels.
